10. The West Wing

The West Wing tells the story of a fictional US Presidential administration and provides a view

into US Presidential politics. In my opinion, it’s one of the most in depth, fictional portrayals of a Presidency on network TV. This award winning series really shows the ins and outs of working for the President and to this day, has one of the most fascinating and intriguing pilot episodes that I have ever seen.

09. Jack and Bobby

This series taking place in 2004 follows two brothers, Jack and Bobby McCallister and one of them will end up being the President of the United State in 2040. This was a smart and interesting drama that was ahead of its time as it used flashbacks as a way of driving the narration of the series. Unfortunately, it only got one season, but it got a full season, so you have 22 episodes to discover who, amongst the brothers, will end up being president.

08. House of Cards

This Netflix original political drama follows a ruthless politician, Frank Underwood, as he uses his ambition to win the most esteemed position in Washington, DC. This is a smart, really tension filled, and ultimately fascinating series that shows the ins and out of politics. Especially because we see things through the eyes of Frank Underwood because he narrates part of the story.

07. Boss

Kelsey Grammer stars as Thomas Kane, the mayor of Chicago who uses his power to influence business in the city. Kelsey Grammer’s superb in this role. Hardnosed, wickedly clever, while at the same time dealing with his own issues which adds a lot of vulnerability to him. It’s just such a masterful performance that it makes the entire show worth watching.

06. Alpha House

This Amazon original comedy follows four senators in Washinton, DC from a diverse political background who also happen to live in the same house. It is a really funny and yet realistic take of the realities of being a modern day DC politician. In a way, it actually casts a much more endearing light on politicians. Definitely worth watching.

05. Veep

Veep follows a brand new vice president, played by Julia Lousie Dreyfus as she puts out political fires, juggles her public and personal life, and does everything within her very limited power to improve her dysfunctional relationship with her job and people who work for her. In its fifth season, this Emmy winning HBO comedy is a hilarious look into the inherent absurdities of our modern political system. And great performances from the entire cast really bring this one home.

04. Brain Dead

Brain Dead follows a young, fresh faced Hill staffer getting her first job in Washington, DC and she finds out two things: one, the government has stopped working, and something mysterious is happening to a growing number of congressman and Hill staffers. This is a personal favorite of mine.  This dramedy was an absolute summer break out for me as it mixes humor, intrigue, and science fiction in an almost ripped from the headline political environment. While it didn’t get renewed for a second season, it’s still a must watch political show and it has a full season now on CBS.

03. The Wire

The series focuses on the drug scene in Baltimore as it sees things through the eyes of the police and also the drug dealers and the users and also explores other facets of the city, including the government, bureaucracy, schools, and news media. Considered one of the best shows of all time, The Wire is a masterful look into the political world of a city and its consequences on its people. Some of the best performances you will ever see on TV are in this show. You cannot miss this.

02. Billions

Wealth, influence, and corruption collide in this drama set in New York. Opposing US attorney, Chuck Rhoades versus an ambitious hedge fund king, Bobby Axelrod. This 2000s series focuses on politics of money and justice as we see that being wealthy comes with some real consequences especially if you’re in a very tense political environment.

01. Game of Thrones

Games of Thrones is a TV adaption of George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy novel tale, A Song of Ice and Fire. The show explores a medieval-like fantasy world where characters are fighting to win the ultimate political prize, the iron throne. For me, this is the ultimate political drama as it delves into the intricate and fickle nature of power through the eyes of those who seek to get it and those who seek to keep it. If for any reason you have hesitated to get into this show, stop what you’re doing and go watch it right now. Because seriously, this is one of the best political TV shows you will ever see.
